Donetsk has a population over 1,000 000 - is a largest city in Eastern Ukraine, fifth largest city in the country. The city is an important center of heavy industry (first of all coal mining) in Ukraine. Coal mines are situated just under the city.
In 1970, Donetsk was recognized by UNESCO as the cleanest industrial town of the world.
